Rishikesh · 7 days · From USD 388
The retreat is based at Rishikesh Retreat Center, a camps-style property set among the mountains just outside Rishikesh town. The center is quiet, surrounded by green hills, and the sound of the river is never far away. Yoga classes happen on an open deck where you can see the sunrise over the Himalayas. The teaching is Hatha and Ashtanga style, led by Subhash, a Rishikesh native who trained in the local ashrams and has been teaching for years. His classes focus on coordinating breath with movement, and he's particularly good with beginners who've never done yoga before.
A typical day starts with yoga, followed by breakfast, then an activity—this is where the retreat differs from a pure yoga holiday. The area around Rishikesh is full of sights, and the retreat takes advantage of that. There's a trip to the Vashist Cave, a visit to the Beatles Ashram with its famous graffiti art, and a hike to a waterfall where you can swim. For the more adventurous, white-water rafting on the Ganges is often arranged. The Ganga Aarti, the evening fire ceremony on the riverbank, is a highlight for most guests—it's loud, colorful, and unlike anything else.
Meals are vegetarian and prepared fresh three times a day. The food is simple Indian cooking—dal, rice, vegetables, chapati—with an emphasis on sattvic ingredients. They're happy to adjust for allergies if you tell them in advance. The accommodation is basic but comfortable: twin rooms with attached bathrooms, big windows, and lots of natural light. There's no AC in the standard rooms, though it can be added for a fee. The wifi works in common areas, and there's a desk and wardrobe in each room for storing your things.
What really makes this retreat work is the balance it strikes. You get structure—yoga times, meal times, planned excursions—but also freedom. Afternoons often have open blocks where you can join a nature walk, sit by the river, or wander into town to browse the cafes and shops near Laxman Jhula Bridge. Guests come from all over the world, so you'll likely end up chatting with people from Europe, Australia, or elsewhere in Asia over dinner. The hosts, including Vivek, are known for being helpful and responsive, both before you arrive and during your stay.
