Home › Retreats › HYROX Preparation Camp in Fuerteventura: Train Smart, Race Smart
Spain · 5 days
The camp runs over five days, with a schedule that balances high-intensity HYROX sessions with recovery and strategy work. Mornings typically start with a technique-focused workout — breaking down sled push and pull, refining your burpee broad jump efficiency, or practicing the rowing and ski erg pacing you'll need. Afternoons might include a compromised running session (running on tired legs after station work), a wall ball volume workout, or a workshop on race-day nutrition and hydration. The exact schedule is published closer to the date, but the structure is built around rehearsal, not just fitness. You'll do at least one full simulation or mini-race to test your pacing.
What makes this camp different from a standard HYROX training week is the emphasis on race strategy. Hugo Hugemark doesn't just run you into the ground; he teaches you how to manage effort across eight stations, when to push, and when to hold back. There are classroom-style sessions where you break down race footage, map out your splits, and adjust your plan based on your strengths and weaknesses. If you've ever gone out too hard on the first run and paid for it on the sled, this is where you fix that. The camp also uses Playitas's facilities: a full HYROX-style setup with sleds, turf, ergs, and a track or outdoor running routes along the coast.
Playitas Resort itself is a sports-focused hotel with a 50-metre outdoor pool, a 400-metre running track, tennis courts, a gym, and direct access to the ocean for open-water swimming. Fuerteventura's climate in late August and early September is warm and dry, with consistent trade winds — good for training but you'll need to manage hydration. The resort is in Las Playitas on the east coast, about 45 minutes from the airport. It's a quiet fishing village with a handful of restaurants and a black-sand beach, so evenings are low-key and recovery-friendly.
The camp is led by Hugo Hugemark, a Playitas ambassador and experienced HYROX coach. Hugo has competed in HYROX and has a background in functional training and endurance sports. He's known for a detail-oriented approach: he'll watch your sled technique, time your transitions, and give you specific cues to shave seconds off each station. The camp is capped to keep coaching personal, though the exact number isn't listed. You'll train alongside a mix of ages and abilities, from first-timers to seasoned racers looking to sharpen their strategy.
If you're preparing for HYROX Tenerife or any other race later in the season, this camp is timed to fit into a training block without overloading you. It's not a boot camp; it's a preparation week. You'll leave with a written race plan, a better understanding of your pacing, and the confidence that you've practiced the transitions and station work under fatigue. The rest of the day is yours — recover by the pool, get a massage, or explore the island. The camp is flexible enough that you can add extra training or rest as needed.
Booking is straightforward: you book your stay at Playitas Resort (choose dates including 31 August to 4 September, accommodation, and board), then add the HYROX Camp for each participant. The camp fee is separate from accommodation. You can also email booking@playitas.net for help. The camp is open to all fitness levels, but you should have a base level of fitness to get the most out of it — you'll be training several hours a day.
