Koh Samui · 7 days
HYROX is a fixed global format: eight rounds of a 1km run followed by one functional workout station, so a full simulation is 8km of running plus eight stations back to back. Maraleina's HYROX classes break that down across sessions — some focus on the running base, others on individual stations like sled work or wall balls, and the schedule includes full-format simulations to see where you stand. The classes started in March 2025 and are now part of the regular gym timetable, open to guests staying at the resort.
What separates this from a gym that simply owns a sled and some kettlebells is the official HYROX Training Destination status — Maraleina is the first in Asia. That means the equipment and programming follow HYROX's global standard, and the certification is recognised by the race organisers, which matters if you're training towards an official event and want your splits to mean something. The resort also runs mini HYROX events on-site, giving you a chance to race the full format in a low-stakes setting before paying for a real entry.
The coaching team is small and mixed. Chantelle McCreight-Devalia is a Canadian physiotherapist and personal trainer, CSEP-CPT certified since 2010, with TRX, kettlebell and APPI Pilates Mat certifications and a Master's in Physical Therapy from 2013. She has worked with everyone from office workers to competitive athletes and specialises in running programmes and return-to-function rehab — the two things most HYROX athletes actually need. Moo Phumsawat is a Thai coach with 200-hour Yoga Alliance certification, NSCA Strength & Conditioning, ACSM rehabilitation specialisation and five years spent as a monk, and offers meditation sessions alongside the strength work.
Koh Samui itself does a lot of the heavy lifting outside the gym. The resort sits on the island's quieter side, away from the Chaweng strip, with beaches within easy reach for recovery swims and open-water running. Temperatures sit in the high twenties to low thirties year-round, so most people train early morning and late afternoon and spend the middle of the day in the pool or under air conditioning. The resort's own facilities — pool, spa, gardens — are set up for exactly that rhythm.
Practical logistics are straightforward. You fly into Samui International Airport and the resort is a short drive away, or you can reach the island by ferry from Surat Thani on the mainland. Classes run on a published timetable, so you can plan a week around two sessions a day if you want, or one session and a lot of pool time. The gym, training centre and fitness spaces are all on-site, meaning you're not shuttling between a hotel and a separate box.
