Iceland · 8 days · From EUR 3995
The retreat is a return trip — the same organisers ran it four years ago and are bringing it back. It's based in Akureyri, which Icelanders call the Capital of the North, on Eyjafjordur. You're a block from the fjord at Hotel Akureyri, which is locally owned rather than part of a chain and has been expanding since 2024 with newer, modern buildings. All the retreat rooms are in those newer blocks: the single-occupancy rooms are from the hotel's 'double' category, petite by American standards with a full/queen bed; the double-occupancy rooms are superior rooms with more floor space and a king bed.
A typical day: breakfast at the hotel any time from 7am, then an 8:30am pickup for a two-hour gentle flow class. You're back for a group lunch at 11:45am. On most days an excursion departs at 1:30pm and you're out for the afternoon. Group dinner is at 6pm when it's included. Three dinners are deliberately left free — Monday, Tuesday and Thursday — so you can eat your way around Akureyri's restaurants instead. The organisers note that times may shift and will be confirmed closer to the date.
The Myvatn day is the big one. You get Godafoss waterfall, lava fields, and a soak in the Myvatn Nature Baths — often called the Blue Lagoon of the North, with fewer people and a view over the geothermal area. Bring a swimsuit. Group dinner that night is in Myvatn. Another afternoon is a ferry crossing to Hrisey Island followed by a hike; the organisers call it one of the power places in Iceland. There's also horseback riding on Icelandic horses through the fjord landscape, and a Friday walk in a local nature preserve near Akureyri that comes with the claim of hidden elves, followed by the final celebratory dinner. The Northern Lights tour gets scheduled on whichever night of the week has the best forecast — there's no guarantee, but late October into early November is a reasonable window for it.
Compared with a standard yoga retreat, the schedule here is built around being outside in a genuinely cold, dark place. You're not sitting by a pool between classes. You're on a ferry, in a hot spring in the open air, or on a horse in November in north Iceland. The yoga is the anchor at the start of each day, not the whole point of the trip. If you want a week that's mostly sun salutations and not much else, this isn't it; if you want the yoga plus a reason to pack thermals, it is.
The yoga is taught by Petra, who owns the studio and holds an RYT 500. Her training is YogaWorks-based — a vinyasa flow method with detailed alignment and breath work — and she's done three separate 300-hour advanced trainings: with The Container Collective (Baptiste-affiliated, Denver) under Brittany Hopkins, with YogaWorks under Jodie Rufty, and with Amy Ippoliti's Vesselify School of Yoga. The daily class is described as gentle flow, so it's accessible, but the instruction is precise rather than loose.
Price-wise, per-person double occupancy was $3,995 and single occupancy $4,695, both currently sold out. A 12-month payment plan was offered for a limited time. Flights, travel insurance, airport transport on the US side, alcohol, tips and laundry are not included. Note that 6.35% Connecticut sales tax applies to bookings.
