Home › Retreats › Istrian Yoga & Culinary Escape: 6-Night Food and Wine Retreat in Bale, Croatia
Croatia · 7 days · From EUR 4895
Bale is a small medieval village in the hills of Istria, about 30 minutes from Pula. The streets are lined with 14th and 15th century houses, there's a castle at the top, and it's close enough to the sea that you can bike to the beach in the afternoon. Istria is the culinary heart of Croatia — truffles, olive oil, oysters, and wine that leans Italian because the border is a short drive away. The retreat is based in a private villa a few minutes' walk from the village centre.
The daily rhythm is simple. Coffee, tea and fruit are out from 8am, then yoga runs 8:30–10am — usually vinyasa in the morning, with a gentler stretch and closing circle on the last day. Breakfast is at 10:15. From there the day opens up: some days you're on an excursion until late afternoon, other days are free for the pool, a massage, a hike, or biking to the beach. You come back together most evenings, either for a sound healing bath, a wine tasting, or a gentle practice, and dinner is at the villa most nights.
What sets this apart from a standard yoga retreat is the food programme. It's not a detox — you're eating gnocchi with truffles you helped hunt that morning, fresh oysters shucked at Tony's in Lim Bay, and a guided tasting of Istrian wines and olive oils at the Meneghetti estate. The trip to Rovinj gives you an evening in one of the prettiest coastal towns on the Adriatic, and the Brijuni island day is a full day out on the water.
The yoga is led by the retreat's own teachers (the operator runs retreats worldwide). Classes are suitable for all levels — the morning practices are strong but modifications are offered, and the evening sessions are restorative. Group size is intimate, and the vibe is sociable: this is a retreat where you eat dinner together most nights and share the excursions.
The villa itself is a cluster of private accommodations with a pool, a garden with shade trees, and an on-site restaurant that's open to the public and well known in the area. Rooms are either deluxe doubles with ensuite bathrooms or larger superior suites with king beds — one has a soaking tub, the other a sitting area, allocated first come, first served.
