Sri Lanka · 5 days · From USD 235
Polwaththa sits 19 kilometers east of Kandy, reachable by a road that climbs into dense, green hills. The property is a group of fifteen simple lodges spread across the forest, with dogs and cats wandering freely and wild boar, deer, and porcupines passing through the edges. The yoga shala is a short trek from the lodge, a wooden platform open to the jungle, where morning Vinyasa is often soundtracked by birdsong and rustling leaves. The teaching adapts to whoever shows up, with options ranging from gentle Yin to more energetic Vinyasa, so beginners and experienced practitioners both find their level.
The retreat is built around the idea that your stay should give back. The Forest Healing Foundation, run by the same family, uses guest contributions to buy and reforest land in the region. Guests are encouraged to plant a tree during their stay, and there are opportunities to meet locals who come to practice English. The schedule leaves real time for rest, but also includes a guided trek through the jungle and local villages, ending with a swim beneath a waterfall, and a hands-on cooking class led by village women. Evenings drift into community dinners cooked in clay pots over a hearth.
The setting is genuinely remote, which is the point. There are few distractions, no traffic noise, and the night sky is properly dark. The lodge staff, drawn from the local village, are warm and eager to share their culture, whether that means teaching a few words of Sinhalese or explaining local Buddhist customs. The food highlights Sri Lankan cooking, with rice and curry staples, fresh fruit, and coffee grown on the property, and the kitchen is happy to adapt to vegetarian, vegan, or gluten-free diets. For travelers who want their yoga holiday to mean something beyond a week of classes, this retreat offers a rare combination of practice, community, and purpose.
