Kamalaya Wellness Sanctuary: A Holistic Health Retreat in Koh Samui

Koh Samui · 7 days · From USD 2500

Kamalaya sits on a hillside on Koh Samui's south coast, about 30 minutes from the airport. The centrepiece is Monk's Cave, a real cave where Buddhist monks used to meditate, now a quiet spot for guests. The property spreads across 76 rooms, suites and villas among granite boulders and forest, with paths connecting the reception, restaurants, pools, treatment rooms and the beach. Many rooms look out over the jungle or the sea; the Beachfront Villas sit on top of rocks right above the water.\n\nWellness programmes here are built by a team that includes naturopaths, TCM practitioners, yoga teachers, fitness trainers, massage therapists and life enhancement mentors. Guests choose a programme based on what they need — stress and burnout, detox, fitness, or something more general — and then work with practitioners to adjust as the week goes on. There is also a Longevity House for anti-ageing treatments (IV therapy, ozone therapy, hyperbaric oxygen) and a Cognitive House for memory and focus work.\n\nA typical day might start with yoga in the pavilion before breakfast, then a fitness class or a one-to-one session with a practitioner, lunch at Amrita restaurant, an afternoon treatment or free time by the beachfront pool, and a meditation or Qi Gong class before dinner. Optional classes run daily and include Pilates, yoga, Qi Gong, meditation, Tai Chi and core fitness.\n\nWhat makes Kamalaya different from a standard spa is the medical side: guests can have diagnostics and functional health assessments, and the programmes are run by qualified practitioners rather than just therapists. The digital detox policy — no phones or laptops in public areas — is also taken seriously here, and guests are given a journal to use instead.\n\nThe food is a big part of the experience. Amrita restaurant serves healthy Thai and international dishes, with options for different dietary needs. There is also an Alchemy Tea Lounge for herbal infusions, smoothies and elixirs, and tea-sharing sessions where guests can learn about Oolong tea and its health benefits.\n\nKamalaya is not a bootcamp; it's a place to slow down, but you can be as active as you like. The fitness offering is broad rather than intense — think daily yoga and Pilates, core fitness classes, personal training, and walking around the extensive grounds. For guests who want more, there are one-to-one sessions with fitness trainers and the option to build a more structured programme.
