Learn to Surf at a Sustainable Beach Camp — Yoga, Nature & Community Included

Costa Rica · 7 days · From EUR 850

The core of the programme is daily surf instruction. Lessons are run in small groups by local instructors — at the Bali camp, guests specifically name Kadek and Made as instructors who kept beginners safe among more advanced students. Boards are provided, and the instructors match you to one based on your level and the day's conditions. If you've never stood up on a board, you'll spend the first session in the whitewash learning to paddle and pop up. If you've surfed before, you'll head out the back with the group and work on turning and reading waves.

Surf times shift with the tide and the wind, so the schedule isn't fixed. Typically there's a morning session, breakfast, a long break through the middle of the day, and then either a second session in the afternoon or a yoga class. Yoga is offered at the camps and is usually included in the surf-and-yoga packages — it's aimed at loosening up shoulders and hips after time in the water rather than being a standalone yoga retreat.

Accommodation varies by location. Some camps have rooms — the Bali Uluwatu site has numbered rooms, and guests have specifically mentioned room 7 for its panoramic ocean view. Others use glamping tents made from fabric and natural fibres. The Portugal Alentejo camp is newer and guests describe it as brand new and looking great. Meals are served on site at most locations; the Bali restaurant gets mentioned repeatedly for its range and portion size, and the Alentejo food is described as 'insanely good' by one guest.

Dreamsea runs camps in Indonesia (Bali Uluwatu, Lombok, Mentawai), Costa Rica (Avellanas, Santa Teresa), France (Soulac-sur-Mer), Portugal (Alentejo, Centro, Sintra), Spain (Cantabria, Gran Canaria, Mediterranean), Morocco (Imsouane), Nicaragua (San Juan del Sur) and Sri Lanka (Ahangama). Each has its own character — Morocco and Sri Lanka are warmer-water destinations with different swell patterns than the Atlantic-facing European camps, and the Costa Rica camps sit in the middle of serious surf country. You pick the destination; the format is broadly the same.

Beyond surfing, camps run beach clean-ups, talks on environmental impact, and participation in local social projects. They work with local partners and NGOs at each location. There's also a group offer: if you're travelling with 10 or more people, or want to host your own surf and yoga retreat at one of the camps, you get a tailored quote and a discount.
