Learn to Surf in Chiba: Beginner Surf Coaching by the Waves of Hebara Beach

Japan · 1 days

Splash Surf School sits directly on Hebara Beach in Katsuura, Chiba, about 1.5 hours from central Tokyo and roughly 2 hours from either Narita or Haneda Airport. The school runs daily lessons at 10:00 and 14:00, and each session lasts around two hours in total. Depending on conditions, instructors pick the best nearby spot for the group's experience level — Hebara is the home base, but there are several other breaks within easy reach. The lesson structure is straightforward: you start by getting fitted into a wetsuit, head down to the beach for a warm-up and ocean-safety talk, then do a land lesson covering the basics of popping up and riding. Once everyone's comfortable, you paddle out and practice with an instructor nearby. By the end of the session most beginners are standing up and riding whitewater waves. Photos are taken during the lesson, so you're reminded to smile at the camera.

Group sizes are kept to a maximum of six people per experience, which means you get real attention in the water. Lessons are offered in both English and Japanese, so it works for international visitors and locals alike. The school also runs special junior classes for kids, and the minimum age for standard lessons is 10. All participants need to be in a fit and healthy state — this is a physical activity and you'll be paddling, standing up and falling off repeatedly. All equipment is provided: surfboard, wetsuit, and in winter, boots and gloves. You just need to bring swimwear, a beach towel, sunscreen and bottled water.

What sets this apart from a lot of surf schools is the location and the flexibility. Hebara Beach is a well-known beginner-friendly break in Chiba, and being based right there means you're not wasting time on transfers. The school also offers accommodation at Splash Guest House if you want to turn a lesson into an overnight stay — useful if you're coming from Tokyo and want to surf both morning and afternoon, or just enjoy the local area. Katsuura itself has a few things to do outside the water, and the school encourages guests to book a night's stay to make the most of it.

The coaching approach is safety-first but relaxed. Instructors run through ocean safety before you get in, and they're in the water with you for the whole session. The goal is to get you standing up and riding by the end of the lesson, but there's no pressure — it's a beginner environment and the waves are chosen to suit the group. Lessons are available year-round, with wetsuits and additional winter gear provided as needed. The school is run by people who know these breaks well and can read conditions to pick the right spot each day.

Booking is straightforward, and there's a flexible cancellation policy: any experience can be canceled and fully refunded within 72 hours of purchase. The school is based at 1122-4 Hebara, Katsuura-shi, Chiba, and you can reach them by phone or email. Whether you're a complete beginner or have tried surfing once or twice before, the format is designed to get you in the water quickly and safely.
