Home › Retreats › Learn to Surf on France's Atlantic Coast: A Week at a Vieux-Boucau Surf Camp
France · 7 days · From EUR 550
Mornings start early. You're up for breakfast at the camp, then into a wetsuit and down to the beach for a surf session that runs roughly two hours. Instructors split the group by ability, so beginners work on the basics — paddling, popping up, reading whitewater — while more experienced surfers head to the outside break with a coach to work on bottom turns, cutbacks and wave selection. The Landes coast is all sandbottom beach breaks, which means forgiving waves for learners and plenty of peaks for everyone else.
After the morning session you come back for lunch, usually something substantial — pasta, salads, grilled meat or fish — because you'll have burned through a lot of energy. The afternoon is yours. Many people go back to the beach to surf again on their own, swim in the lake, or just lie in the shade of the pines. Twice a week the camp runs a yoga class, usually late afternoon on the deck, which is a welcome stretch after days of paddling.
The camp schedules a couple of organised activities during the week: a day trip to somewhere nearby — Biarritz, Hossegor or a local market — and at least one barbecue or party night where everyone eats together and stays up later than they should before the next morning's surf. There's also a meal package option, so you can take breakfast, lunch and dinner at the camp rather than cooking or eating out.
What sets this apart from a lot of surf camps is that it's genuinely set up for adults who want a proper holiday rather than a hostel-style surf trip. Accommodation is in bungalows or glamping tents with real beds and proper facilities, not cramped dorms. The camp has a pool, a bar and communal areas, and the atmosphere is social without being a party camp — you can have a quiet beer on the terrace or join whatever's happening that evening.
The instructors are certified surf coaches who know these breaks well. They'll tell you which banks are working, where the rips are, and when to sit out if the swell is too big for your level. That local knowledge matters on this coast, where conditions change fast and the difference between a great session and a frustrating one is often just being in the right spot.
The location is the other big plus. Vieux-Boucau is quieter than Hossegor or Biarritz but you're still within easy reach of both. The beach at the camp is a short walk through the dunes, and the town's saltwater lake — a calm, shallow lagoon connected to the sea — is ideal for SUP, kayaking or a swim when the ocean is blown out.
