Madeira Surf Camp: Surf and Stay on the North Coast

Portugal · 7 days

A typical day starts with breakfast at the guest house, then a drive to whichever north coast break is working best that morning. The team checks conditions daily and picks the spot to suit the group's level, so beginners are not thrown into overhead sets and experienced surfers are not stuck in whitewater. You get coaching in the water and feedback on the beach, then lunch and a rest before an afternoon session or a SUP tour if the surf is flat.

What separates this from a generic surf school is the stay. Madeira North Coast Guest House was set up by Andreia and Ruben specifically to host surfers and SUP paddlers, and the camp runs in collaboration with it. You are not commuting from Funchal; you are sleeping a short distance from the breaks on the same coast. The guest house is run in a familiar, relaxed way, and guests eat and spend evenings together rather than dispersing to hotels.

The north coast itself is the other draw. The cliffs are steep and green, and the Laurissilva forest — a UNESCO World Heritage site — runs right down to the coastline, so you are surfing with that backdrop rather than a strip of hotels. The water and air stay mild through the year, which means you can surf in a 3/2 wetsuit or boardshorts depending on the season.

The school offers more than lessons: surfboard and SUP rentals, guided surf trips to find uncrowded waves, and a shape room for board repairs and custom work. If you are an athlete training for surf or SUP competitions, you can ask for a programme built around daily practice. If you just want to learn to stand up on a wave during a holiday, that is equally fine — the camp takes beginners, experts and everyone in between.

Groups are kept small enough for the instructors to actually watch you surf, and the team speaks English and Portuguese. If you do not see a package that fits, the school says it will customise one.
