Hungary · 7 days
The retreat is based at the Kali Fasting Retreat in Szentbekkalla, a quiet spot in the heart of Hungary surrounded by green forest. The method used is the Airola approach, developed by the Finnish naturopath Dr Paavo Airola, which the team here considers the most achievable form of fasting they've worked with. In practice that means no solid food for the week, but plenty of liquid: freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices, herbal teas, filtered water and a filtered vegetable soup each day. Vitamin and mineral supplements are provided to cover what you're not getting from meals. On day one you take Epsom salt to clear the bowels, and from day three there's a gentle gravity enema each day — the team is clear that this is essential, because a properly cleared system doesn't send hunger signals and it heads off the headaches and nausea that can come with detoxing.
A typical day starts with short exercises and yoga, usually the Five Tibet Rites and some breath work. After that there's a light walking tour of two to four hours through the countryside — the idea being that once your body isn't busy digesting, it actually wants to move. Afternoons are for the liver wrap: you're tucked under a blanket with a hot water bottle over your liver and you nap for a couple of hours. Guests consistently name this as a highlight. Then come the treatments — full body massage, lymph massage, vacuum massage, reflexology, or a beauty treatment, depending on the day. There's a sauna every second day, heated to a maximum of 85°C, with an en suite shower, relaxation beds and a swimming pool in the garden. Guest therapists come in for sessions like sound healing and NIA dance.
What separates this from other fasting retreats is the medical supervision and the family running it. Dr Ilona Sovenyhazi is a general practitioner who specialises in paediatrics, homeopathy and detoxification therapy, and she has personally supervised fasting groups here for over two decades. She's on site for all courses. Gary Pap trained as a theatre nurse at King's College London and worked in the NHS and private practice before moving back to Hungary in 2022; he's also a massage practitioner, reflexologist and qualified fitness instructor. Eva Hollo, his wife, is a massage specialist, reflexologist, beauty practitioner, trained nutritionist and life coach. Between the three of them you're covered for medical questions, practical support and the psychological side of a week without food.
One full day is given over to a trip to Hévíz Lake Baths, about an hour away. The lake covers 4.6 hectares and is fed by a spring warm enough to bathe in year-round; the water is rich in dissolved and gaseous minerals — carbonic, sulphurous, calcium bicarbonate and magnesium bicarbonate — and the whole lake replaces itself every 72 hours. It's been a healing destination since 1795 and is the largest peat-bed spa lake in the world. For most guests it's the closest thing to a treat in a week that's otherwise quite disciplined.
The programme suits people dealing with a range of conditions — digestive complaints, circulation problems, skin issues like eczema and psoriasis, joint and arthritic pain, chronic back problems, and type 2 diabetes — as well as anyone who simply wants to give their system a reset. It's not suitable if you're pregnant, recovering from major surgery, or have liver or kidney failure, common heart failure, stomach ulcers, type 1 diabetes, tuberculosis, malignant tumours, Gilbert's syndrome or active depression. The team screens for this, so be honest about your history when you book.
