Home › Retreats › Mount Kenya Wellness Retreat: Forest Bathing, Sauna & Contrast Therapy in a Private 100-Acre Sanctuary
Kenya · 7 days
The property is a restored country house rather than a purpose-built resort, and it shows in the best way — deep verandas, a library with a working fireplace, gardens that run into the forest edge. The wellness facilities are spread across the grounds rather than stacked in one wing. The cedar-walled sauna seats twelve and is positioned as the thing to do after a safari day. The Swedish wood-fired hot tub sits outside among the lavender and takes a few hours to heat, so it's booked ahead. The pool is open all day with an attendant on hand for towels and drinks. The massage room is poolside — botanical oils, reflexology, manicures, pedicures, all by appointment.
The forest is the real centrepiece. Mukima's owners stopped farming 100 acres in 2005 and let it return to indigenous canopy. There are 237 recorded bird species and regular sightings of bush buck, reed buck, hares, porcupines and hedgehogs. A soft trail runs a complete loop through it, signposted with 'Woodland Waddle' markers, and benches are set along the route specifically for pausing or meditating. The owner calls it 'the gift that keeps on giving' — a line that's earned, given two decades of protection.
Afternoon contrast therapy is available as a private booking: the ice bath and the sauna sit side by side in two rooms that can be reserved together for an hour, with a wellness concierge walking you through the protocol and what it does. The property recommends checking with your doctor first if you have any health concerns.
Retreat weeks are hosted by visiting practitioners rather than in-house staff, and the themes vary by season — yoga and breath on some weeks, sound or nutrition on others, women's circles and men's circles on others, and the occasional creative residency. Because it's a small calendar, the exact practitioner depends on which week you book. Private retreats can be built around your own group outside those dates.
What separates Mukima from a standard wellness hotel is the combination of scale and restraint. It's 100 acres of protected forest with a bird list, not a landscaped garden. It's a twelve-seat cedar sauna and a hot tub you have to plan around, not a spa menu with thirty treatments. And the wellness offering is explicitly 'unsupervised' — you take the sauna when you want it, you walk when you want to walk. The property is also candid that some things need supervision: the pool asks for strong swimmers only when nobody's watching, and a pool attendant is always nearby.
