Mount Meru Climb via the Momella Route

Tanzania · From USD 1518

Mount Meru (4,566 m) is Tanzania's second-highest peak and one of Africa's most underrated summits. It is far quieter than Kilimanjaro and makes a superb climb in its own right. It is also ideal for acclimatisation before a bigger Kilimanjaro attempt. The only way to the summit is the Momella Route, which climbs from Momella Gate in Arusha National Park through wildlife-rich forest. Look out for colobus monkeys, giraffes and buffalo, and an armed ranger escorts the group.

You spend nights at Miriakamba Hut and Saddle Hut, with an optional climb of Little Meru (3,820 m) before sunset. A pre-dawn start takes you along the dramatic crater rim to Socialist Peak for sunrise, with Kilimanjaro on the horizon. The terrain near the summit is steep and rocky, with some scrambling. Foot Slopes quote summit success rates of 80–90%.

You can climb Meru in 3 or 4 days. The 4-day climb adds a night back at Miriakamba Hut after the summit, so the descent is gentler. Both include park and rescue fees, an English-speaking guide and chef, porterage, meals and mineral water, airport transfers, and hotel nights in Arusha before and after.
