Muay Thai Training Camp in Koh Tao with On-Site Accommodation

Thailand · 7 days · From EUR 150

Training here is traditional Muay Thai: stance and footwork first, then punches, kicks, elbows and knees, then clinch work and pad rounds. Group classes run about 1 to 1.5 hours and are split between conditioning — skipping, shadow boxing, bag work — and technique work with a trainer holding pads for you. There's usually a mix of complete beginners, people on a few weeks' holiday who train regularly at home, and fighters preparing for a bout on Koh Tao. The trainers adjust to whoever is in front of them, which is why the reviews repeatedly mention how beginner-friendly it is despite the gym's fight record.

Private sessions are one-on-one for a full hour and are where the technical progress happens fastest. Marina, one of the reviewers, did three private sessions in three days with trainer Jame and came away with better technique and noticeably improved conditioning. If you've never done Muay Thai before, one or two privates at the start will get you comfortable enough to hold your own in the group classes. Prices are low by Western standards: a group class is 300 THB, a private is 600 THB, and package rates drop the per-session cost considerably.

What separates this from the dozens of other Muay Thai camps in Thailand is that it's a real island gym with real fight-night involvement. Kru Rin has helped organise Koh Tao's regular fight nights for years, and many of his students have fought on them — and won. If you want to fight, there's a pathway here for it. If you just want to train hard for a week and get better at something new, that pathway existing in the background is what gives the coaching its edge. The trainers are described as strict but funny about it; they'll push you, then laugh with you when you get it wrong.

The gym is on the main road in north Sairee, about 30 metres past the turning for Asia Divers Resort, on the right-hand side. It's a walkable spot — you're close to the beach, the bars and the restaurants, but the gym itself is set back enough to be quiet. Opening hours are Monday to Saturday for group and private classes; Sunday is private sessions only. Accommodation is offered directly by the camp, so you can organise a training-and-staying package in one go rather than piecing it together yourself.

Be honest with yourself about the heat. Koh Tao is hot and humid year-round, and the reviews all say the same thing: it's very tiring, wear light flexible clothing, and bring more water than you think you need. Sessions at 8am and 4pm are timed to avoid the worst of the midday sun. If you're coming from a desk job, expect the first two or three days to hurt and the fourth to feel great.
