Home › Retreats › Muay Thai Training Camp in Phuket with On-Site Rooms, Pool and Café
Thailand · 7 days
Training at Sumalee follows a fixed daily rhythm. The morning starts with a run around local villages and quiet roads, which serves as the warm-up. Then comes the main Muay Thai session, covering technique, sparring and conditioning. Breakfast in the on-site café is built to help recovery and fuel the next session.
Between sessions you have a few hours to yourself. The pool is the default option, but there are also yoga and strength and conditioning classes, and massage is available. Everything — rooms, café, pool, training area — sits within a few yards of each other, so you are not travelling between a hotel and a gym.
Evenings are social. Dinner is eaten with the other camp mates, then there is pool, darts and table tennis, often with the trainers joining in. The gym describes the mood as sabai sabai — relax, relax — before an early night ahead of the next training day.
The gym has operated in Phuket since 2011 and its trainers teach Muay Thai technique alongside the sport's history and traditions. Programmes are pitched at the individual, so a complete beginner and a seasoned fighter can train in the same camp at different intensities.
Outside the gym, the camp is a base for seeing Thai daily life: nearby markets, local temples and Thai food. The gym sits in the centre of Phuket, with nature sounds in the morning and sunsets in the evening.
