Nicaragua · 7 days · From EUR 1200
A typical day at Costa Dulce starts early with coffee and fruit before the surf session. Surfers walk down to the beach where the surf camp is stationed — the beach break here is sandy-bottomed without hidden rocks or a strong current, so it suits everyone from first-timers taking a lesson to experienced surfers paddling out on their own. After the morning session there's a full breakfast back up at the lodge, then yoga in one of the ocean-view shalas, usually a vinyasa or hatha class taught by whichever teacher is on rotation that week. Classes change regularly because instructors come from different countries and backgrounds.
The afternoon is the open block. You can book a massage or one of the spa treatments, do the sauna and cold plunge circuit, take a salsa class, go for a hike on the jungle trails behind the property, or just lie in a hammock on the beach with a margarita from the little locally owned restaurant down the sand. Some afternoons there are cultural excursions off-site, and during turtle season you can go and watch hatchlings make it to the water. Dinner is farm-to-table and served communally — the kitchen leans on fresh local produce and will cater to vegan, gluten-free and other protocols if you tell them in advance. Evenings are quiet: live music nights, salsa under the stars, or just sitting out on a cabin balcony listening to the jungle.
What sets this apart from a standard surf-and-yoga week is the amount of choice built into the booking. You're not locked into a fixed schedule — after paying your deposit you get access to a guest portal where you can book or drop into any activity at any point during your stay. If you'd rather not plan anything, the 7-night Signature Retreat packages include all the weekly activities plus one or more daily program tracks, so your days are already mapped out for you.
The property itself is an eco-lodge built into a hillside, with rooms and cabins spread across different levels. The higher cabins — Delfin, Villa Cortez, Cangrejito, Jicaro, Nido — get ocean views and breezes; the lower ones sit closer to the jungle. Facilities include two ocean-view yoga shalas, a pool, scenic cold plunge, sauna, spa treatment rooms, and a Temazcal. They also make their own handmade products under the Nica Naturals label, and the kitchen follows farm-to-table principles with produce sourced locally.
Getting there is easier than people expect. Two international airports are within roughly 2.5 to 3 hours: Liberia (LIR) in Costa Rica and Managua (MGA) in Nicaragua. Costa Dulce arranges private transfers from both, and if you're crossing the land border from Costa Rica they walk you through the process. The area is a remote, close-knit community on the southern coast — the lodge has 24/7 on-site support and is well regarded as a safe base for solo travellers and families.
