Off-Grid Meditation, Yoga & Hiking Retreat in Arizona's Chiricahua Mountains

United States · 3 days · From USD 86

The Savanna Hermitage sits at 4,600 feet elevation on a quiet dirt road near the town of Pearce, about 100 miles east of Tucson. The property itself is two small cabins—one for the host, one with two private guest rooms—plus a shared kitchenette and an outdoor meditation circle. There are no neighbors in sight, just grasslands, juniper, and the Chiricahua Mountains rising to nearly 10,000 feet on the horizon.

Each day follows a gentle but consistent structure. Mornings begin early with a two-hour session of meditation, yoga, and qigong at the outdoor circle, led by Karl. The start time shifts with the seasons, from 5 a.m. in summer to 9 a.m. in winter, so you're practicing in the cool of the day. After a simple vegan lunch of brown rice, pinto beans, and vegetables, there's an afternoon hike into the mountains—typically four to five miles on rugged trails. Karl has been hiking these canyons for 20 years and knows where the power spots are: balanced rocks, sacred springs, waterfall pools. The hikes include time for meditation and qigong at those places, and you'll often have the trails almost entirely to yourself.

What makes this retreat different is how little there is to distract you. There's no internet on site, no TV, no alcohol, no drugs, no candles or incense. The guest cabin is also a silent space, so headphones are requested for any audio, and phone conversations are kept to a minimum. This is deliberate—the point is to direct your energy toward your practice rather than outward stimulation. Guests are encouraged to practice digital minimalism and to use the time for sitting meditation, walking the nature trails, reading from the small library, or simply resting.

Karl is present without being intrusive. He'll lead the morning practice and the hikes, answer questions about the land, geology, or spiritual practice if you ask, but he's just as comfortable with complete silence. Several guests have requested total silence for their entire stay, and he honors that fully. The reviews from past visitors—a PhD student writing a dissertation, a college professor on sabbatical, a woman seeking deep solitude—all mention the same thing: the space is clean, quiet, and genuinely conducive to inner work, but it requires self-reliance and a willingness to be alone.
