Malta · 7 days
Amchara Gozo runs on the idea that nobody needs the same week. You fill in a health questionnaire before you arrive, and the team — combining functional medicine and naturopathy — design your stay around the answers. If weight loss is the goal, the plan leans on calorie-controlled fresh food or a juice/water fast with supplements. If it's gut health, you might get food intolerance testing and a removal protocol. If it's stress or sleep, more of the schedule shifts toward treatments, psychological support and rest.
The core daily rhythm doesn't change much. Morning yoga, pranayama and meditation. Freshly prepared juices, smoothies and food through the day, tailored to whatever plan you're on. Midday classes: aquacise in the pool, Pilates, guided walks along Gozo's coast and countryside. Afternoon treatments — massage, reflexology, reiki — plus free use of the infrared sauna and swimming pool. Most days there's an educational talk or a raw food preparation demonstration in the afternoon, which is where a lot of guests say they pick up the habits that stick after they go home. Evenings are for one-to-one health coaching, group therapy sessions, or simply switching off.
What separates this from a standard detox retreat is the range of clinical options on site and the fact that they're all tailored rather than pre-packaged. Colonics and coffee enemas are available (at extra cost), as are fresh naturopathic remedies and wheatgrass and sprout supplements. There's one-to-one psychological support and health coaching built into the programme, not sold as an add-on. Functional medicine testing informs the plan rather than sitting behind it.
The property sits in L-Għarb on Gozo, Malta's smaller and much quieter sister island. Sixteen luxury apartment-style healing rooms, a large outdoor pool, an infrared sauna, spa treatment rooms and a dedicated yoga studio with sunset views. Gozo gets year-round Mediterranean sunshine, which is why so much of the schedule happens outside — the walks, the pool sessions and the evening yoga on the studio terrace.
Guests tend to be a mix: solo travellers (a lot of them), some couples, and a fair number of repeat visitors. Sadie Frost has been a client for ten years and is now a brand ambassador for the retreat, which tells you something about the kind of stay people have here. Several of the reviews come from guests on their second or third visit. The through-line in what they say is the staff — constant monitoring, nobody pushing anything, protocols adjusted as the week goes on, and a plan for after you leave.
