Mexico · 8 days · From EUR 1850
A typical day at Paikea looks like this: you're up for a meditation walk along the beach at 7:30, barefoot on the sand. Then it's Pilates Reformer at 8:30 — Keoni and Gabriela both teach it, and with a group of three or four people you get hands-on correction rather than a class you follow from the back row. Breakfast is at 9:30. From 10:30 to 2:00 you're free: read, swim, sleep, or book a massage. At 2:00 the group heads out to a beach with lunch set up on the sand, then from 3:30 to 5:30 it's whatever the day calls for — snorkelling, kayaking, surfing, or paddleboarding. Sunset meditation at 6:00 at a coastal viewpoint, dinner at 7:30, silence from 9 PM.
What separates this from a standard Pilates retreat is that the water sports are led by someone who has genuinely done them for decades. Keoni Nalu Cuccia is a Hawaiian-born professional surfer with 35 years in the ocean, a former Los Angeles County lifeguard of 20 years, an EMT, and a certified surf breathwork instructor. He's not a yoga teacher who also surfs — the surf coaching, the paddleboarding, the snorkelling guidance and the safety side of it all come from him. The Pilates Reformer instruction is split between Keoni (PMA certified) and Gabriela Farías Diaque, who has taught Reformer for over 18 years and yoga for more than 12.
The location does a lot of the work. Arroyo Seco has 358 residents, dirt roads, and two beaches — Playa Chica and Playa Grande — known for surfing. The surrounding fields are mango, papaya, and coconut. There's an estuary for kayaking and birdwatching, a mirador for sunrises and sunsets, and almost no commercial development. You'll see donkeys, horses, cows and goats in the streets. It is not a resort town and it isn't trying to be.
Food is cooked on site from the property's organic garden wherever possible — eggs, fruit, herbs, and the ingredients for homemade aguas frescas and daily snacks. Bread is baked in-house, oils are organic avocado, coconut and olive, sauces and salsas made fresh daily, and the menu shifts with what's growing. The garden is part of the kitchen rather than a decorative feature.
