Home › Retreats › Pilates, Surf & Silence: An 8-Day Wellness Adventure on Mexico's Costa Alegre
Mexico · 8 days · From USD 1850
Every day follows the same rhythm but changes with what the coast and the garden are doing. You're up for a 7:30 silent meditation walk along the sand, then an 8:30 Pilates Reformer class, then breakfast at 9:30. The late morning, 10:30 to 2, is genuinely free — this is when massages happen, or when you just sit with the silence and the beach. Lunch is set up on the beach around 2:30, followed by the afternoon's adventure activity from 3:30 to 5:30: snorkel, kayak, surf, or paddleboard depending on the day and the conditions. A 6 PM sunset meditation and 7:30 dinner close things out before the silence period begins at 9.
The water activities range across the region's bays. You can surf at Xametla, snorkel and kayak the clear water at Tenacatita, stand-up paddle at La Vena, and explore more of the coast by bicycle. The surrounding landscape is mango, papaya and coconut fields, estuaries good for fishing and birdwatching, and two beaches — Playa Chica and Playa Grande — known locally for their surf.
Three guides run the week, and their backgrounds are the reason the activities are as varied as they are. Keoni Nalu Cuccia, Hawaiian-born, is a professional surfer and former Los Angeles County lifeguard with 35-plus years in the ocean, certified in Pilates Reformer and surf breathwork; he leads the tours and the water activities. Gabriela Farías Diaque leads the Pilates Reformer and the meditations, with over 18 years teaching Reformer and 12 teaching yoga, plus two decades as a surf instructor and tour guide. Daniel Pardo, Colombian and long resident in Mexico, guides the sound healing and the earth-centred ceremonies out of a Hatha yoga and Red Road background. Yolanda, a Mexican curandera, handles the therapeutic massages and the cacao circle.
The setting is deliberately remote. Arroyo Seco has 358 inhabitants, dirt roads, and animals in the streets — this is rural Mexico rather than a polished beach town, and the appeal is exactly that it's untouched by mass tourism. Despite the remoteness there's Starlink Wi-Fi and hot water throughout, so disconnecting is a choice rather than a limitation. Getting there means flying into Manzanillo (about 1.5 hours away, with a free transfer both ways), Puerto Vallarta, or Guadalajara, with bus connections for the last two.
All meals are included and come largely from the on-site organic garden — eggs, fruit, herbs, aguas frescas and daily snacks — with a menu that shifts by season and what's ripe. Instruction runs in both English and Spanish, and the minimum age is 16, so it works for couples, friends, or solo travellers comfortable in a small group.
