Rewilding Yoga & Walking Retreat in the Scottish Highlands

Rewilding Yoga & Walking Retreat in the Scottish Highlands

United Kingdom · 7 days · From EUR 1200

The retreat is based in the West Highlands, with the main indoor base sitting right in the mountains so you can walk out from the door rather than driving to a trailhead. Days follow a rhythm: yoga or movement before breakfast, a packed lunch on the hill, a long walk of four to six hours, then back for a hot shower and a proper dinner. Evenings are low-key — a bit of stretching, maybe a talk on mountain skills, and early nights.

What sets this apart from a standard yoga retreat is the guiding. The people leading the walks are qualified mountain leaders, not just someone who knows the path. You'll actually learn things: how to read a map, judge the weather, move efficiently on steep ground. If you've never used a compass, you will by the end. That mix of skill-building and yoga is unusual — most trips do one or the other.

The yoga is gentle to moderate, aimed at walkers rather than advanced practitioners. Expect hip openers, hamstring stretches, and breath work to help with the climbs. It's not a handstand workshop. The teacher adapts to the group, and if you're stiff from the day before, that's fine.

On the Wild Yoga Retreat specifically, there's also forest bathing, journaling, and sketching. You might spend an afternoon sitting by a burn drawing what you see, which sounds twee until you're actually there and realise how rarely you stop. Wild swimming is offered when conditions allow — Loch Ossian is the usual spot, and it's cold.

Accommodation is comfortable but not luxurious. Think a well-kept Highland house or bunkhouse-style lodge with twin and double rooms, a shared living area with a fire, and drying rooms for wet gear. You eat together at a big table. The food is home-cooked, hearty, and mostly vegetarian, with plenty of soup and stew after a day out.

If you want the wilder version, there's a wild camping journey across the Cairngorms, West Highlands and Knoydart, where you carry your kit and sleep under canvas. That's a separate itinerary and more demanding. The indoor-based retreats are the ones most people book.
