Rio de Janeiro · 4 days · From EUR 160
Days start early because the wind usually picks up by late morning. You'll have breakfast at the house — fruit, bread, eggs, coffee — then load boards into the van and drive to whichever beach is working that day. Barra da Tijuca and Recreio are the closest and most consistent; further out there are quieter breaks that are better for longboarding or when Barra is too crowded. Lessons run around 1.5–2 hours with a coach in the water, and if you want a second session in the afternoon you can usually arrange it.
Instruction is matched to level. Complete beginners start on the sand with pop-up drills, then move into waist-deep whitewater with the coach pushing or guiding you into waves. Intermediates work on bottom turns, trimming, taking off on steeper sections and reading the lineup. Advanced surfers get guidance on positioning, wave selection and video analysis to fix habits that are hard to see from inside your own head.
Yoga runs on the days your package includes it — usually a morning session before surfing or a late-afternoon stretch after two sessions. It's not a hardcore ashtanga class; it's mostly mobility, hip openers, shoulders and lower back, which is exactly what you need if you've been paddling for three hours. The yoga is optional in the custom package builder, so if you'd rather just surf, you can skip it.
The extras are what separate this from a basic surf hostel. Package 2 and 3 include a surf-skate lesson (useful for practising the motion of a bottom turn on land), video analysis of your surfing, and an Ayurvedic massage. You can also add a Rio city tour, a samba lesson, or the 'Carioca Experience' which is basically a local guided day out. Airport transfer and unlimited board rental are optional add-ons in all packages.
Accommodation is beachfront, which matters more than it sounds — you can walk out, check the surf, and decide whether to paddle out before breakfast. The house is set up for surfers: board storage, outdoor shower for rinsing off sand, communal areas for hanging out in the evening. You'll meet people from all over — Brazilians, Europeans, Australians, North Americans — and the common language is usually English, though the crew speaks Portuguese and Spanish too.
The camp runs year-round. Brazilian summer (December–March) is hotter and busier with bigger crowds in the water; the shoulder months (April–June, September–November) tend to be cleaner and less packed. Rio's surf isn't huge — most days are chest- to head-high beach break — but it's consistent and there's almost always something rideable. If you're chasing slabs, this isn't that trip. If you want to improve your everyday surfing, surf a lot, and actually experience Rio instead of sitting in a resort, it is.
