Montenegro · 7 days
Mahakala Center is a retreat space and slow-stay guesthouse in Buljarica, on the coast of Montenegro. The building sits on a hillside looking over Buljarica Bay, and the place is shaped by the light, the stone and the pace of coastal life around it. It was founded as a mother and daughter project, and Dr. Vesna Lemm — a Berlin-based doctor with decades of experience in holistic medicine and detox therapies — guides the centre's work.
The centre's own description of itself is a place to slow down, reconnect and restore. In practice that means a quiet house by the sea, a kitchen that feeds guests, and a programme of retreats and therapies rather than a fixed daily class schedule. The centre also hosts retreats run by outside teachers, so the calendar changes through the season.
Alongside the retreat programme, Mahakala takes accommodation bookings for slow stays — you can simply come and stay, without joining a structured retreat. That flexibility is unusual for a place with this much therapeutic focus.
What separates it from a generic coastal guesthouse is Dr. Lemm's involvement. Detox therapies and holistic medicine are the centre's stated foundation, not an add-on. If you want a week of sea air and quiet with a doctor's input available, this is the setup; if you want two training sessions a day, it is not.
Buljarica itself is a long pebble bay south of Petrovac, quieter than the better-known stretches of the Montenegrin coast, with the hills of the Rumija range behind it. The centre's position above the bay gives it the view and the distance from the road.
