Hungary · 4 days
Oázis Tanya sits on sandy, rugged ground in rural Hungary, a landscape where, as one past guest put it, everything that grows there is a survivor. The farmstead runs a small campsite from 1 May to 30 September and a guesthouse that's open all year. If you book the individual retreat, you take the guesthouse or, between May and October, a Comfort Tent or your own pitch on the campsite.
What you actually do here is mostly up to you. Mornings might start with coffee outside and a slow walk; afternoons with a nap, a book, or time in the saltwater pool (fed by the property's own spring, open during camping season). Alies offers coaching in Dutch and English, and if you both feel there's space for it, you can add sessions to the plan — a walking conversation, a fire ritual, a yoga class to work tension out of the body, a guided meditation, or a creative session with forms, colours or words. None of it is compulsory, and some of it can be arranged on the spot rather than in advance.
Both of the included meet-ups happen at the edges of the stay: the first on arrival, the second before departure. In between, Alies is present on the property but not in your space unless you ask. If you'd rather she checked in briefly each day, that can be arranged. If you'd rather see nobody for three days, that works too.
What separates this from a standard yoga or wellness retreat is the lack of programme. There is no 7am bell, no group dinner, no schedule pinned to the wall. You shop and cook for yourself in the guesthouse kitchenette, or eat with other guests when meals are being cooked during camping season (mid-May to mid-August). Alies can have basic groceries waiting or a soup ready on your arrival day if you're coming in late.
The property is reachable by car, or by plane or train via Budapest — Alies picks guests up from the nearest train station. If you arrive without a car, you can shop together on your first day. July and August are the busiest months, with more families on site, so they're less suited to a quiet retreat; spring, early summer and September are calmer.
