South Africa · 5 days
Reboot Retreat operates several trips rather than one fixed programme. The Mountain Meander runs in the Cederberg over five days, with daily hikes through the sandstone formations, yoga sessions, meditation and cold water therapy in mountain pools and rivers. The Whale Coast Wonder is a four-day Overberg trip on the southern coast, where the hiking is coastal and the stand-up paddleboarding happens in sheltered water. Forest Frolic is a four-day slackpacking retreat on the Garden Route — you walk with a day pack while your luggage is moved for you. Longer trips include Ocean Odyssey in Ponta, Mozambique, and a safari saunter in Kruger and Blyde River Canyon that is still being finalised.
A typical day starts early with yoga before breakfast, then a hike or paddle of three to five hours. Afternoons are for cold water therapy, another yoga session, or rest. Evenings are communal meals and, on clear nights, star viewing — the Cederberg is a dark-sky area. The pace is active but not competitive; nobody is timing you up a hill.
Private departures are available in the Cederberg, Overberg and Garden Route on your chosen dates, and these are used for team building, corporate wellness and couples retreats. Tell them what you want and they build the itinerary around it.
What separates this from a standard yoga retreat is the activity level and the guide. Kayden Kleinhans has cycled the Sahara, Andes and Himalayas on self-supported expeditions and filmed them for "Global Wheeling". He leads many of the hikes himself, which means the days are longer and further out than a resort programme would run. If you want a week where you actually cover ground and come back tired, this is that; if you want a spa week, it isn't.
The locations are the other draw. The Cederberg is rock formations, caves and clear rivers three hours north of Cape Town. The Overberg coast has fynbos, whales in season and quiet beaches. The Garden Route section is indigenous forest. All of it is far enough from the cities that the digital detox happens by default, not by willpower.
