Sri Lankan Jungle Wellness Retreat with Daily Yoga and Temple Tours

Sri Lanka · 8 days · From USD 820

The Samadhi Centre began as an abandoned tea estate and has been slowly rebuilt into a 20-room retreat property using reclaimed materials, antique furniture, and traditional mud-and-cow-dung construction. The result is a place that feels more like staying in someone's very large, very old house than checking into a hotel — mismatched antiques in every corner, open-air bathrooms with freestanding tubs, terraces looking out over jungle and river.

Yoga takes place in a four-sided open shala with no walls, so you practise surrounded by the sounds and smells of the jungle. Sessions run daily and cover Hatha, Yin, and dynamic styles, all taught by Maheshe Kodikara, who has been teaching yoga, Tai Chi, and Qigong for more than 40 years after training in Sri Lanka, Australia, Japan, and India. Classes are suitable for beginners through advanced practitioners, with adjustments offered as needed.

The food is a highlight in its own right. The centre grows its own rice in the paddy fields below — 13 varieties of ancient heirloom grains — and sources vegetables from an on-site garden. Meals are served three times a day in the open-air restaurant, cooked over traditional fires and presented as family-style spreads of curries, sambols, and rice. Vegetarian and vegan options are standard; gluten-free and diabetic-friendly requests can be accommodated.

Beyond the daily yoga, the week includes a cooking class where you learn to prepare traditional Sri Lankan dishes, a guided nature hike through the surrounding hills, and a visit to one of Kandy's famous temples (the Temple of the Tooth is a short drive away). There's also time built in for river bathing, waterfall walks, and simply sitting on your terrace watching the birds. Optional Ayurveda treatments — Shirodhara, synchronized massage, herbal therapies using plants grown on the property — are available for an additional fee.

The atmosphere is deliberately quiet and slow. There's no spa reception desk or activities board; instead, you sort out your day over breakfast with the staff. Wi-Fi works, but the setting discourages heavy screen time. Most guests describe it as feeling like a house guest rather than a hotel customer — the traditional 'Ayubowan' greeting at arrival sets the tone for the week.
