Surf Camp in Weligama Run by Sri Lanka's National Champion

Sri Lanka · 3 days

A typical day starts with breakfast on the top floor of the camp, looking out over the waves. Guests who have stayed here single out that breakfast repeatedly. After that you pick your surf slot. Beginner and intermediate lessons run several times a day, and the coaching is hands-on: Lucky and his instructors correct what you are actually doing wrong rather than just pushing you into waves. One guest wrote that her lesson was the best she had had for explaining the theory behind catching green waves on her own.

Between sessions the camp is a place to sit still. The After Surf rooftop café looks straight down the break, so you can watch the waves and drink coffee before deciding whether to go back out. There is an open-air yoga shala for sessions, and sunset yoga is available if you want it. Fibre Wi-Fi runs throughout, which makes it workable if you need to answer emails between surfs.

The location is the real difference. It is a few sandy steps from your room to the water, and the camp sits away from the crowded surf spots, so the break out front is not overrun. Weligama itself is a working fishing village, and the camp leans into that rather than walling itself off from it. Staff will point you to restaurants and help you get around.

Surfing is not the only option. You can book a room without lessons if you already surf and just want to stay at the break, or book lessons without a room if you are staying elsewhere in Weligama. That flexibility is unusual for a surf camp, most of which only sell fixed packages.

Beyond the home break, the south coast has more than 15 surf spots within reach, ranging from easy longboard waves to more challenging reef breaks. The camp can help you get to them. Evenings tend to be loose: dinner, the rooftop, and whatever the other guests are doing.
