Surf Camp on the Cotentin Peninsula: Learn to Surf in Wild Normandy

A typical day starts with a look at the sea. Ben checks the conditions, decides where the waves will be best, and everyone piles into the van. Where you surf changes day to day, because the Cotentin coast picks up swell differently depending on wind and tide. That flexibility is the whole method here: you go where the waves are, not where the schedule says.

Lessons are split by level. Complete beginners start with the basics in the white water, in a spot Ben picks for safety. Improvers and intermediate surfers work on positioning, paddling and turning. Video is used properly, not as a gimmick: you watch the footage at the surf school, Ben points out what to change, and you go back out and try it.

Between sessions the surf school is the base. There is a sofa and a screen for reviewing footage, and a small shop selling surf accessories, sweatshirts, t-shirts and locally made pieces. It is somewhere to hang out before and after sessions, ask about the area, and plan the rest of your day.

The accommodation is separate from the school and comes in two forms. The Surf House sleeps up to eight in three bedrooms, set up as doubles or shared rooms depending on the booking, five minutes from the beach, shops, bars and restaurants. The Guest House is a one-level place for up to four, with a bedroom, a living area with a sofa bed and a fully equipped kitchen, a five-minute walk from the beach.

Ben has taught surfing for more than 20 years, from beginners through to competitors, and knows the marine environment here well. Elise trained as an instructor and grew up in a surfing family. This is a family project, and their children Lily and Milo are usually around. That is the character of the place: small, personal, and built around the tides rather than a packed programme.
