Surf, Eat, Repeat: All-Inclusive Surf Camp in Salina Cruz, Mexico

Mexico · 7 days · From EUR 138

The surf program here runs from April through September, when southern hemisphere swells light up the sand-bottom point breaks around Salina Cruz. Water sits around 80°F (27°C), so you're surfing in boardshorts or a bikini most of the time. The camp has access to more than ten breaks, each with its own character — San Diego is mellow enough for learning, Conejo is where you go to work on technique, and Chipehua is the one for getting barreled. The team watches the forecast daily and picks the spot based on wind, tide, swell direction, and how crowded things are.

A typical day starts with a self-serve continental breakfast from 5:30 AM. Once the group has decided on a plan, you load into 4x4 trucks — each stocked with a cooler of purified cold water — and head to the beach. The team unloads your boards and sets up a beach camp with chairs and a shade cover. You have two ways to structure the day: a 4-5 hour morning session with a return to camp for food and rest before a second session until sunset, or one long 8+ hour session with meals served right on the beach. Either way, you're back at the house for dinner, which is cooked by their chef using local seafood and traditional Oaxacan flavors.

What sets this apart from bigger surf camps is that nothing is fixed. They don't run the same schedule every week — the itinerary bends to the swell. If conditions are best at first light, you go then. If the wind is wrong in the morning but cleans up in the afternoon, you wait. Santiago, the founder, grew up surfing these breaks and started guiding at 16. He and his brother are part of the first generation of Salina Cruz surfers, and Sebastian, the co-host and guide, has been exploring the coastline by boat since before surfing became popular here. Both hold captain's licenses and lifeguard certifications and are active members of the Salina Cruz Lifeguard Association.

The camp itself is a four-bedroom house with A/C throughout, private bathrooms with hot and fresh water, and high-speed WiFi in two zones if you need to take a work call. Outside there's a terrace with seating, outdoor showers, and an ice bath for recovery. Inside there's a TV for surf replays or movies, a selection of games, and yoga mats and rollers for post-surf stretching. Each night everyone gathers around the big main table for dinner — it's that kind of place.

Beyond surfing, you can book extra experiences like a trip to the Guingola ruins, a cenote tour at Tolistoque, boat tours for fishing or spearfishing, deep tissue or relaxation massages, and professional photo or drone filming. When you book as a group of three or more, one boat expedition to hit two surf spots is included.
