Home › Retreats › Surf Fitness Week in Jeffreys Bay: Coaching, Waves and a Beachfront Surf House
South Africa · 7 days · From EUR 399
The week is built around six surf lessons, one per day, with one rest day. Instructors are ISA-trained, and the coaching runs from complete beginner through to intermediate — paddling out the back, reading waves, positioning, and for the more advanced, working on turning and timing. Lessons happen at the beach breaks in front of the surf house, but the team also has access to several other spots around Jeffreys Bay, so they choose waves that match both the group's level and the day's conditions. On good days you can watch J-Bay itself peeling down the line from Boneyards to Albatross.
The surf house is the base all week. It sits right above the beach with direct ocean access, a big pool outside, a fully equipped shared kitchen, and spacious common areas. There are dorms, a double room, a twin room and a suite, plus a bathtub with a view. Maximum capacity is 22 guests, and there's 24/7 staff on site. Free performance Wi-Fi is included, which matters if you're trying to work between sessions or upload footage.
Beyond surfing, there's one braai — a South African barbecue — during the week and one adventure trip. The half-day safari to see South African wildlife is the headline option, and there are also hikes in the area. Jeffreys Bay is a small town with a strong surf community, and the host, Meeka, describes it as the kind of place where it's easy to feel at home. You'll get plenty of time to explore it.
Conditions wise, the water runs 14–17°C in winter (May to September) and 19–22°C in summer (November to March). A 4/3mm wetsuit is right for winter, a 3/2mm or springsuit for summer — and a wetsuit is provided in the package for the lessons regardless. The beach breaks in front of the house are often very uncrowded. J-Bay itself can get busy on good days, but it's still one of the least crowded high-quality breaks on the planet.
What makes this different from a generic surf camp is the location and the numbers. You're steps from the water, the group is capped at 22 in the house, and the coaching is tied directly to a named wave and a named town rather than a vague 'surf paradise'. The team also throws in a two-week pre-trip surf fitness programme from a Surf Strength Coach, plus discount codes for Suntribe sunscreen and OY surf bikinis and yoga wear.
