Home › Retreats › Surf & Stay Fitness Camp in Newquay: Progressive Surf Coaching & Coastal Training
United Kingdom · 5 days · From EUR 450
Base Surf Lodge has been running these camps for 12 years. The format is simple: choose a 3-night or 5-night stay, and each day is built around one or two surf sessions with coaching. Mornings typically start with breakfast in the garden, then a land-based warm-up and movement session before you head to the beach. The coaches — a small team of qualified instructors — watch you in the water and give specific feedback on paddling, positioning, and timing. If you're a complete beginner, they'll get you standing and riding whitewater. If you're already surfing unbroken waves, they'll work on turns and wave selection.
The location is the other big draw. Newquay is the centre of British surfing, and the lodge is a five-minute walk from Fistral and Towan beaches. Because the two beaches face different directions, there's usually somewhere with rideable waves even when conditions change. The coaches also teach you how to read the surf report, understand tides, and manage rip currents — practical stuff that makes you safer and more independent in the water.
When you're not surfing, the schedule is open. You can walk into town for coffee or lunch, visit the aquarium, go coasteering, paddleboard on the Gannel Estuary, or just stretch in the movement room and nap. The lodge has a cozy living area with free wifi, a tropical garden with raised vegetable beds, and communal bathrooms that were recently renovated. It's a homely setup, not a hotel.
Food is a big part of the experience. Breakfast is included daily, and on most evenings there's a barbecue in the garden. The owners cook with fresh, local, organic whole foods and cater to dietary needs — vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, whatever you need. You eat together at outdoor tables, often with a fire going if it's chilly. The atmosphere is social but not forced; solo travellers often choose the shared dorm to meet people, while couples and small groups take private rooms.
What sets this apart from a standard surf lesson package is the coaching style. The instructors don't just demo and watch; they break down each phase of surfing — paddling, popping up, turning — and give you drills to improve. They also cover ocean safety and surf forecasting so you leave with skills you can use anywhere. The group size is capped at 10, so you get plenty of attention. It's a good fit if you want to genuinely progress, not just rent a board and splash around.
