Surf & Stay on Portugal's Atlantic Coast: 7-Night Baleal Surf Camp

Baleal Surf Camp operates out of Praia do Baleal Campismo, next to Baleal, right on the surf spot known as Cantinho da Baía at the north end of the Peniche Peninsula. It was one of the first surf schools to open in Peniche and Portugal, and the camp itself has been running since 1993. The beach is the front door — there's no drive to the waves, no shuttle bus, no loading boards into a van at 7am.

A typical week here is built around your surf level. On arrival you're assessed and placed in a group matched to your ability and to the day's conditions, then coached through sessions designed to move you forward rather than just push you into whitewater. Beginners get the basics: paddling, popping up, reading the wave, water safety. Intermediates work on turning, positioning, wave selection. Lessons run on Baleal's main beach break, which is forgiving on smaller days and still fun when it picks up, and there's a wide spread of other spots around the peninsula when the swell direction changes.

The accommodation side is deliberately flexible. There's a hostel with dorm beds for people watching their budget, and private apartments for couples, families or anyone who wants their own space and a kitchen. Both are in Baleal, both are close to the beach and the surf station. The camp also runs specific programmes outside the standard week: a Light Surf Pack with 7 nights and 5 lessons in low and mid season, accommodation-only bookings with surf equipment rental for independent surfers, a Families Surfcamp programme, children's and teens' lessons, and standalone surf lesson packs. Rentals include Firewire performance boards if you want to try something faster than the standard foamie.

What sets this place apart is the location. It's the only surf camp in Peniche sitting directly on the beach. That changes the rhythm of the day — you can surf at dawn before breakfast, come back mid-afternoon for another session, and watch the sea conditions from the webcam or from the terrace any time. Bar do Bruno is on-site, and there's a restaurant next to the school. The west region around Peniche also has plenty to do on a rest day: Nazaré is nearby (home of the biggest wave ever surfed), and Lisbon is roughly 90km away by bus.

The coaching team is the other thing guests consistently mention. Reviews name instructors like Jobson, Facundo, Andre and Alessandro specifically — the pattern across them is that instructors are patient, hands-on, and genuinely into teaching rather than just supervising. Groups stay small enough for direct feedback.
