Home › Retreats › Taoist Inner Alchemy Retreat at a French Château
France · 3 days · From USD 890
The retreat takes place at Château Mont Joly, an 18th-century estate in Gan, about 15 minutes from Pau in southwest France. The building has been restored by its English owners, who have mixed the original character — high ceilings, tall windows, stone walls — with modern furnishings and en-suite bathrooms. The point of the setting is quiet: there is no traffic noise, just gardens, fields, and the mountains beyond.
The program is built around Taoist inner alchemy, a centuries-old internal practice that uses breath, movement, and meditation to refine energy and awareness. Each day includes Qigong breathing exercises, Tai Chi forms, Taoist meditation, and sessions on embodied movement. Sifu Gabriel also gives talks on the theoretical side — the 'inner formulas' of alchemy, what the practices are actually doing — and leads experiential exercises that connect the theory to direct sensation.
What makes this different from a general mindfulness weekend is the depth of the tradition behind it. Sifu Gabriel trained directly under Grandmaster Wing Lam in California and was selected in 2008, from over 15,000 students, to become his disciple. He is the only representative of the Wing Lam Kung Fu school in the region and also represents the Sun's Tai Chi Research Institute in Beijing, a government-endorsed organization. This is not a distillation of Taoism for a weekend audience; it is the source material, taught by someone who has spent two decades living it.
The host, Akhanta, keeps the group to ten participants. With so few people, the teaching adjusts to what each person brings — the same session can look different depending on who is in the room. After the retreat, there is a private community where participants and facilitators stay in contact over the following months, which gives the work a continuity that most short retreats lack.
