Home › Retreats › Teen Surf & Ocean Adventure Camps in California, Costa Rica & Beyond
United States · 7 days · From EUR 1000
The individual camps vary quite a bit, so it is worth knowing what each one actually does before booking. Catalina Sea Camp, out of California, runs on Catalina Island and mixes marine science with snorkelling, kayaking and island exploration — it leans more educational than pure surf. WB Surf Camp is the most straightforward surf-first option, running overnight camps out of California, North Carolina and international locations including Costa Rica, with a stated mission of teaching ocean respect alongside surfing technique. Sea Turtle Camp splits its time between North Carolina and Costa Rica and is built around marine science fieldwork — campers do hands-on research with sea turtles and other coastal wildlife alongside water time.
For a broader adventure mix, Bold Earth Adventures has been running teen trips since 1976 and combines surfing with hiking, rafting and leadership training across US and international itineraries. Alpengirl is the girls-only option, running one- and two-week multi-adventure trips for ages 10 to 17 in the Northern Rockies, Pacific Northwest, New England and Europe — surfing is one activity among hiking, camping and climbing rather than the whole point. ActionQuest is the sailing- and dive-focused alternative: participants live aboard boats and earn certifications in sailing, scuba diving and windsurfing, with marine biology coursework built in and high school credit available.
Rustic Pathways and ARCC both run large portfolios of teen travel programmes in over 20 countries, with surf and ocean options inside broader cultural and adventure itineraries. Global Works Travel takes a service-learning angle, combining travel with community projects and outdoor adventure. If the goal is specifically to surf every day, WB Surf Camp is the cleanest fit; if it is to learn marine science, Sea Turtle Camp or Catalina Sea Camp; if it is a first big trip abroad with a group, ActionQuest or Rustic Pathways.
Most programmes are one to four weeks, run in the northern hemisphere summer (June to August), and cost somewhere between roughly €1,000 and €5,000 depending on length and destination. Nearly all of them include lodging, meals, activities and supervision in the price, with flights extra for the international trips. Transport between camp locations or to activity sites is generally arranged by the operator, and some trips include airport pickup on arrival day.
The common thread is small-group, staff-supervised travel where kids are offline and outdoors for the duration. Groups are typically capped somewhere in the 8 to 16 range, though exact numbers vary by programme and session, and counsellors are with participants around the clock. Parents get pre-trip packing lists, enrolment paperwork and usually a contact procedure for emergencies. Every camp on this list states some version of the same thing: build confidence, teach ocean skills and send them home tired, salty and with a group of friends they did not have before.
