Thanda Luxury Safari & Wellness Retreat: Big Five Country Spa Escape

South Africa · 6 days · From EUR 1200

Thanda runs two distinct wellness settings: Thanda Safari in South Africa and Thanda Island in Tanzania. The safari side is a private game reserve in Zululand, roughly three hours north of Durban near the town of Hluhluwe. Guests stay in the main Thanda Safari Lodge or at Thanda Tented Camp, and the wellness programme runs from the Thanda Safari Spa, which sits in the bushveld rather than in a hotel basement. Treatments are done with local oils and products, and the therapists work with the same quiet pace as the rest of the reserve — no flouro lights, no waiting room music.

A typical safari day starts early, because that's when the animals move. You head out with a ranger and tracker for a morning game drive, often catching lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard on the reserve, along with the smaller things — birds, tortoises, the occasional chameleon. Breakfast back at the lodge, then the middle of the day is yours: a spa treatment, the gym, the pool, or a siesta in your room. Late afternoon means another drive, or a guided walk if the reserve is running them, then dinner at the lodge and usually a nightcap around the fire.

If you want the fitness side to be more structured, the lodge can arrange a personal trainer or guided runs on the reserve roads, in addition to the private gym. There are also mountain bikes available at some properties, and the bush walks themselves are a decent workout — a two or three hour walk with a ranger, on uneven ground, in heat. None of this is compulsory. You can do as much or as little as you want, which is what makes it work as a wellness trip rather than a fitness holiday with a spa attached.

Thanda Island is the other half. It's a private island in the Shungu Mbili Marine Reserve off the Tanzanian coast, with one villa, Villa iZulu-style privacy, a private gym and a spa. The water is warm, the reef is right there, and the island runs the same service model as the safari camp — a team looking after a small group of guests, meals on your schedule, diving and snorkelling if you want it. Some guests combine the two: safari first, then fly to the island for the beach half, which gives you a week or two that covers both the bush and the ocean.

The properties are run by the same group, and the standards are consistent. Rooms are comfortable and well-appointed — this is a luxury Safari property, not a hostel — and the food leans local and seasonal, with a decent wine list and the ability to cater to specific diets if you tell them in advance. The reserve is also part of a wider conservation and community project, so your stay is effectively funding anti-poaching work and local employment, which is worth knowing if that matters to you.
