Tulum Wellness & Fitness Retreat: Yoga, HIIT and Spa on the Beach

Mexico · 7 days

A typical day at Amansala starts before sunrise. Ginger tea is out at 6:30am, then guided meditation and breathwork at 7:00, followed by a barefoot walk on the sand at 7:30. Vinyasa flow runs at 8:30 in one of the resort's yoga shalas, and breakfast is at 9:45 — fresh, locally sourced, and substantial enough to fuel what comes next. At 10:45 there's circuit training on the rooftop with views over the water. Lunch and free time follow at 1:00; this is when people swim, read in a hammock, or book a treatment at the spa. The 6-day package includes two one-hour bodywork sessions with local therapists. Afternoon movement — Mat Pilates or dance — runs from 4:45 to 5:30, then slow flow yoga from 5:45 to 6:45, and dinner under the stars at 7:30.

The fitness side is genuinely varied: HIIT, circuit training, barre, dance and Mat Pilates, so you're not doing the same thing six days running. Yoga is scheduled twice daily — energising vinyasa in the morning, yin or gentle flow in the evening. A healthy cooking class is part of the programme, and there's a group Mayan Clay Ritual that most guests name as the thing they remember most. Optional add-ons include a breathwork and ice bath session, a cacao and sound healing ceremony, and a traditional Mayan Temazcal.

One excursion takes you to the region's cenotes — ancient underground lagoons surrounded by jungle, lit by natural openings in the rock. Swimming there is a half-day trip and is included in the schedule.

What separates this from other Tulum wellness retreats is the age of the place. Amansala opened in 2001 when this coast was still undeveloped, and the same owner, Melissa Perlman, still runs it. The programme has been running long enough to be well-drilled, and the resort's twenty-five years here give it connections to local guides, healers and therapists that newer operations don't have. The crowd skews heavily toward women travelling solo, which shapes the atmosphere — communal dinners, people pairing up for excursions, and no pressure to be anything other than a guest.

Rooms range from beachfront suites to small, simple rooms, all built in the resort's original eco-chic style. You can book a King for privacy or a Double with two Queens if you're travelling with a friend. Note that shared rooms must be booked by two people together — you can't reserve a shared room as a solo traveller. If none of the scheduled dates work, the resort will build a custom package with different dates or as a private group.
