Weight Loss and Wellness Retreat in the Latvian Countryside

Weight Loss and Wellness Retreat in the Latvian Countryside

Latvia · 7 days · From EUR 1200

The programme runs on an all-inclusive basis. You pick a category — Basic, Extra, Vitality or Relax — and a room, and from there everything is provided: five meals a day, daily physical activities, spa procedures, and access to the grounds and sports hall. The Basic programme is the classic gradual weight-loss track, designed for steady reduction over a longer stay. Extra is more intensive, aimed at people who need to shift volume quickly for an event like a wedding. Vitality is less about weight and more about burnout and chronic fatigue — the food and exercise are still there, but the emphasis is on rest and stress reduction. Relax is the lightest option: healthy meals and spa treatments with no strict weight-loss target.

Days follow a similar shape whichever programme you're on. You eat early and often — five small meals rather than three large ones — and the food is Latvian and seasonal: rye bread, root vegetables, cabbage, fish, berries, dairy from local farms. Exercise happens in blocks. There are guided walks on the 10 km trail, exercise sessions in the sports hall (football and tennis are available there too), and health exercises that focus on mobility and posture. Horseback riding and walks with horses can be arranged. For something less physical, there are herbal tea and spice workshops, sound therapy sessions, and a library with board games. Massages and physiotherapy are built into the schedule rather than being add-ons, and the team includes two masseurs, a physiotherapist, a physician assistant and a facial aesthetics specialist.

The centre is four-star but not luxurious in a glossy way. Rooms are comfortable and functional, the grounds are the main event, and the atmosphere is closer to a well-run health farm than a boutique hotel. Staff speak Latvian, English, Russian and German depending on who you get — the two main contacts are Monta Norkuse (English) and Maija Atvara (Russian and German). The team is led medically by Liga Sprude, a physiotherapist who supervises the programmes, with Marta Sedola also a health specialist and physiotherapist, and Laura Baltaiskalna a health specialist and physician assistant. Aiga Zikmane handles facial aesthetics, Arta Emily Kaktina is the cosmetologist, Zane Priedolte runs the spa, and Ilga Cirule and Arturs Arajs are the masseurs.

The location is rural South Kurzeme, near the village of Aizpute, in western Latvia. The estate — 'Lejas Raķi' — is enclosed and private. Within the territory you have the walking trails, the animals, the sports hall and the spa. Outside it, the team can arrange a traditional Latvian sauna ritual in Aizpute, a trip to the UNESCO-listed town of Kuldīga and the Ventas Rumba waterfall (the widest in Europe), a visit to a shiitake mushroom farm, or a day in the coastal city of Liepāja. The centre is reachable by car or public transport, and they offer a transfer service.

The main difference between Via Vitalité and a typical European weight-loss retreat is the medical staffing and the length flexibility. You're not locked into a Monday-to-Sunday week. You can arrive on a Tuesday and leave ten days later. And because there's a physician assistant and physiotherapists on the team, the programme can be adjusted for people with back problems, injuries or other conditions that would rule out a bootcamp-style camp. It's also genuinely four-season — the trails are used in winter, and the sauna and spa treatments are arguably better in cold weather.
