Wellness Escape: A Month of Stillness, Yoga and Plant-Based Living in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai · 30 days · From USD 222

Mala Dhara Yoga Retreat Center sits in a valley just outside Chiang Mai, looking out over rice paddies that change from bright green to gold as the month goes on. The owner, Ploy Issarajun, built the place around a simple idea: give people a beautiful, quiet space where they can slow down and practice without any pressure. She's a local who's deeply tied to the land—she rides buffalo, grows much of the food served in the kitchen, and has created a resort that runs on sustainable principles.

A typical day starts with sunrise meditation and a gentle yoga session, followed by breakfast. After that, the time is yours. Some guests spend hours by the saltwater pool, which has a small waterfall feature; others take books to the gardens or nap in the shade. In the afternoon there might be an optional breathwork session or a walk through the paddies. As the sun drops, everyone gathers again for evening yoga and meditation, then dinner together. On some nights, guests break out instruments for impromptu music and dancing under the stars.

The food deserves its own paragraph. The Kin dee Restaurant cooks plant-based meals that change with what's in season and what's growing on the land. Think colorful curries, fresh salads, and creative tofu dishes that actually have flavor. They're not just catering to vegans with token options—these meals are the highlight of many guests' stays. The kitchen also accommodates vegetarian diets easily.

What really sets Mala Dhara apart is the combination of rootedness and openness. The retreats here are often led by visiting teachers from around the world, but this September program is hosted in-house by Khun Ploy herself, which means it carries that local, grounded feel. It's a rare chance to practice with the person who designed the place and who knows every corner of the land. With only twelve spots, the experience stays intimate, and guests often form real connections over the shared meals and quiet evenings.
