Wellness Retreats in France: Detox, Hiking & Adventure Escapes

France · 7 days · From EUR 1200

Retreats in France tend to be intimate rather than production-line. You might be one of eight guests at a restored farmhouse in the Lot, or one of twelve at a coaching villa in Provence. The programmes are run by a mix of independent coaches, yoga teachers, nutritionists, and outdoor guides — many have trained in the UK or France and have been running weeks for 5–10 years. The tone is relaxed but structured: there’s a schedule, but nobody minds if you skip a session to read by the pool.

A typical day starts around 7:30 with yoga, breathwork, or a guided walk. Breakfast is at 9, often buffet-style with fruit, yogurt, eggs, and good bread. Mornings are for the main activity — a hike, a fitness class, a detox workshop, or a coaching session. Lunch is around 1pm, then afternoons are free until a late-afternoon class or treatment at 5. Dinner is at 7:30, and most people are in bed by 10. On longer retreats there’s usually one full free day midweek.

What makes these weeks different from a generic spa break is the combination of programme and place. A detox retreat in the Lot isn’t just juices — it’s daily yoga, walks through sunflower fields, and a nutritionist explaining what to eat when you get home. A hiking retreat in the Alps isn’t just walking — it’s a guide who knows the best cols, a sauna at the end of the day, and a group that eats together every night. A menopause retreat in the Pyrenees brings in a specialist who stays for the whole week, not just a one-off talk.

Instructors and facilitators vary by retreat, but most have relevant certifications: yoga teachers with 200- or 500-hour trainings, hiking guides with local mountain qualifications, nutritionists with clinical backgrounds, and coaches with ICF or similar accreditation. Several retreats are run by husband-and-wife teams or small partnerships, which means the person who greets you on day one is often the same person cooking dinner on day five. That continuity is a big part of why people come back.

Locations range from the Luberon and Provence, where you’re surrounded by lavender and hilltop villages, to the foothills of the Pyrenees, the rolling Lot valley, the Alps, and the Atlantic coast near Ile de Ré. Each area has its own flavour: Provence is warm and social, the Lot is quiet and rural, the Pyrenees are dramatic, and the Alps are for people who want altitude. Wherever you end up, you’re rarely more than 30 minutes from a market, a vineyard, or a trailhead.

Price-wise, most weeks fall between €1,200 and €2,800 depending on length, room type, and how many treatments are included. That usually covers accommodation, all meals, daily activities, and some transfers. Flights, travel insurance, and extra spa treatments are not included. A few retreats offer early-bird discounts or shared-room reductions if you book more than three months ahead.
