Tonga · 7 days · From EUR 4100
Each day follows a similar shape. You start with yoga, pranayama and meditation before heading out, then spend roughly 9am to 4pm on the water. The boat goes out in peak humpback season, when mothers and calves are in Tonga's sheltered waters. You watch from the boat, listen to the whales through the hull, and enter the water in turns — four people in the water at a time, rotating through a group of eight so everyone gets their share of close encounters. Afternoons back on land are for rest, the sauna or ice bath, and evening integration sessions where the group talks through what came up.
What separates this from a standard whale-swim tour is the structure around the water time. The morning practice and the evening integration are treated as part of the programme, not add-ons, and the workshops and shared meals are what the host says allow the encounters to stay with you after you fly home. The other difference is the access: Tonga is one of the few places in the world where in-water humpback encounters are legal and regulated, and the operators here work with local guides who follow those rules — no chasing, no crowding, entering only when the whales approach.
Maja hosts the week herself. She has been running ocean retreats for eight years and this is her fourth year guiding retreats in the region. She also offers a free 30-minute call before booking if you want to talk through whether the week suits you.
'Eua is a small island a short domestic flight from Tongatapu, Tonga's main island. The retreat includes that domestic flight and transfers from Fua'amotu to 'Eua, plus transfer from 'Eua airport or the ferry. The accommodation sits right on the beachfront, and the host notes you may hear whale song at night from the rooms. The island tour and kava ceremony give you a look at Tongan culture beyond the water, and the marine biology talks cover what the whales are doing in these waters and why they migrate here from Antarctica each year between July and November.
