Home › Retreats › Wilderness Fitness Safari: Camel Trek & Mt. Kenya Hike
Kenya · 9 days
Days 1-3 (Night 1-3): You'll fly from Nairobi to Nanyuki, then drive north into Laikipia to meet your team and start a 3-night camel safari. Each day you'll walk, track wildlife, and sometimes run, with camels carrying tents and gear. You'll camp in a new beautiful camp each night. Along the route you'll rock climb on ancient rock kopjes and do CrossFit, HIIT, trail running, and stretching with expansive wilderness views. Instructors Isaac (CrossFit, training, trail running) and Paul (rock climbing, walking, trail running) lead the fitness sessions. After lunch each day, there's time to rest or read.
Day 4 (Night 4): On the last morning with the camels, you'll wake early for a short walk before a hearty and healthy breakfast. Then vehicles take you to the start of the Mt. Kenya hike. You'll enjoy a picnic en route and begin walking on the Chogoria access road, camping near a small stream that night.
Day 5 (Night 5): Hike up to Lake Michaelson and camp among tussocks and heath by its shore. Lake Michaelson has excellent trout fishing—bring a packable flyrod if you like. The camp is stunning, surrounded by sheer rock walls.
Day 6 (Night 6): A rest day at Lake Michaelson for acclimatization, exploring, or fishing.
Day 7 (Night 7): From Lake Michaelson, hike up to summit Point Lenana around lunchtime. On a clear day you'll see miles toward the Aberdare Mountains. After photos and high fives, descend easily to Makinder's for the night, with superb views of Batian.
Day 8 (Night 8): From Kami hut, walk down the Naro Moro route to meet your vehicle at the gate. Lunch en route and sad goodbyes to the team in the lush forest at the bottom.
This retreat is different from a typical fitness camp because it's a full safari: you're moving through big-game country and climbing a major mountain, not stuck in a gym. The fitness is woven into the adventure—you'll do CrossFit and HIIT sessions in the wild, trail run past zebras and giraffes, and rock climb on real rock. The instructors are experienced in both fitness and outdoor leadership, so safety and fun are balanced. Accommodation is in tents at mobile camps, with camels carrying everything, so you experience a true expedition feel without heavy packs.
