Windsurf, Wingfoil and SUP on Curaçao's Spanish Waters

Europe · 1 days

Surfspot Curaçao runs out of a base on the Spanish Waters, a sheltered inland bay near Caracasbaaiweg on the south side of Curaçao. The operation covers windsurfing, wingfoiling, stand-up paddleboarding and a surf café, and it's open to locals and visitors alike. You don't need any prior experience for the lessons, and you don't need to book a course to use the place — rentals are available if you already know what you're doing.

The windsurf lesson is pitched as a one-hour introduction, which is enough to get most beginners standing and moving on the board. The bay's flat water and steady trade winds do a lot of the work here. Wingfoil lessons follow the same approach: short, practical sessions with an instructor beside you, aimed at getting you flying rather than spending the whole lesson on theory.

The mangrove SUP tour is the gentler option. You paddle through the calm mangrove channels around the Spanish Waters with a guide, and it works even if you've never stood on a board before. It's a good half-day activity if you want time on the water without the learning curve of a wind sport.

What sets this apart from a standard rental shack is the combination of instruction, rental, food and accommodation in one spot. You can take a lesson in the morning, eat at the café at lunch, and be back on the water in the afternoon without driving anywhere. The café is open daily from 10:00 to 17:30 with front-row views of the bay, and the two-bedroom Kabritu View house — private pool, garden — is available if you want to base yourself on site for a few days.

The operation is small and informal. There's no fixed weekly programme or retreat schedule; you book the sessions you want, when you want them. That makes it flexible if you're already on the island, and easy to combine with other things on Curaçao.
