Douro Valley · 7 days · From EUR 1500
The Source sits inside a 400-year-old quinta in the Douro Valley, about an hour and a half east of Porto. The property is working estate land — terraced vineyards, old stone buildings, and long views down the valley. Guests sleep in one of nine shared or private rooms, eat in a dining room with a fireplace, and practice in a purpose-built studio or, when the weather holds, in the outdoor courtyard.
A typical day starts with pranayama and a Hatha or Vinyasa class before breakfast. After the morning meal there's a workshop — on the archetypes, on Ayurvedic daily routine (dinacharya), on seasonal eating, or on rest. Lunch is the main meal of the day, then the afternoon is completely unscheduled: walk the estate, swim in the plunge pool, read, or take a trip into the valley. Late afternoon brings a second, gentler practice — restorative or Yin — followed by dinner and, most nights, tea by the fire.
What separates this from a generic yoga week is the Ayurveda thread. Esperanza teaches the constitution (dosha) framework in plain language, and the food and daily schedule are set up to match it rather than just being 'healthy'. The archetype work is done in group sessions and journalling, not lectures — Eva has run this format enough times to keep it practical.
The venue is a genuine 400-year-old quinta, not a built-for-purpose retreat hotel, so expect stone walls, uneven floors, and character over polish. It's also a working retreat centre: the same property runs 200-hour and 50-hour teacher trainings, which means the yoga props, the studio, and the teaching standard are all set up for serious practitioners as well as beginners.
Eva Maxine Hamilton is the lead teacher. Sixteen years of professional teaching and more than twenty teacher trainings behind her means she can read a room and adjust — she'll give more advanced options to people who want them and strip things back for anyone who's newer or working around an injury. The retreat is capped by the size of the venue, so you're never one of forty people at the back of a hall.
