The week runs Monday to Friday, with some weekend options too. You stay in your own spacious ensuite bedroom with a king-size bed, and all meals and refreshments are cooked in the house. Nobody expects you to do anything except write, eat and, if you like, get outside.
Every retreat follows a structured schedule. That means blocks of protected writing time each day, plus check-ins with Nic and Wendy to set goals, talk through problems and make a plan for the work. How much guidance you take is up to you: some guests want a daily conversation about their draft, others just want a closed door and a cup of tea delivered. The aim is practical. You should leave with new chapters drafted, a plan for developing the project, and, for some people, a finished book.
What sets this apart from a generic writing holiday is the personal set-up. It's a house, not a conference centre, and the support is tailored to each writer rather than delivered as a fixed workshop programme. People come to start a new idea, push through a long-running project, hit a deadline, prepare a submission to an agent or publisher, or just to write without the usual distractions at home.
Nic and Wendy run the retreats and look after guests through the week. The page doesn't give their professional backgrounds, but they're the ones you'll talk to about your writing and who'll steer you through the stay.
The location does a lot of the work. The house overlooks the Dee Valley near Corwen in Denbighshire, with hills, mountain routes and riverbank trails close by. A walk between writing sessions is easy to fit in, and there are plenty of other outdoor activities in the area if you want a full afternoon away from the page.
There's also a Shakespeare holiday programme run from the same house, for people who'd rather spend the week reading and talking about the plays than drafting their own work.
