Japan · 7 days
Shin-Kokyu Yakushima runs its weight-loss programme inside a private forest property on Yakushima, the island added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1993 and best known for its ancient yakusugi cedars. The accommodation sits on a sacred mountain, separated from the surrounding community, overlooking the sea. You are not in a resort village here — you are in the trees, with the ocean somewhere below.
A typical day starts with sunrise yoga. That is followed by personal training, adjusted to whatever level you arrive at, and later by a cooking class built around local vegetables. The food side is treated as part of the programme rather than a service: you learn what goes into the meals you're eating, and you cook. Evenings end with a guided stretching session to settle the body before sleep.
The weight-loss element comes from the combination — daily movement, controlled meals made from local produce, early nights, and a lot of walking-worthy forest around you. There's no gym floor here, no group class schedule with a dozen options; it's a small, focused routine repeated across the week, which is what makes it work for people who want structure rather than choice.
Because the property is secluded, the days are quiet in a way that's hard to find on a normal holiday. You hear birds rather than traffic; the morning light hits the deck as the sun rises over the sea. Guests who come here tend to be looking for that isolation as much as the programme itself.
Yakushima itself is worth the trip — moss-covered forest, hiking trails through the old cedar stands, and coastline that is still largely undeveloped. The retreat is built around the property and its surroundings rather than a busy itinerary, so the island is something you absorb between sessions rather than tour.
