Koh Samui · 7 days · From USD 901
Vikasa is a yoga and wellness retreat that has been running on Koh Samui for years. The name means 'evolution' in Sanskrit, and the idea is that you come to rest, but also to grow. The retreat is open to all levels—from complete beginners to advanced practitioners—and the daily class schedule is varied enough that you can always find something that suits you.
The typical day at Vikasa starts early. The sun rises over the Gulf of Thailand, and there's a morning yoga class in one of the ocean-facing salas. The classes are led by a team of resident teachers, including Michael, Niki, Ann, Mikey, and Kara, who each bring their own style. Michael teaches strong and flowy Vinyasa with a focus on alignment. Niki travels the world teaching and has a life-changing approach. Ann focuses on the physical practice, guiding students into advanced poses in a joyful way. Mikey discovered yoga on a visit to Vikasa and now lives on the island. Kara had a background in dance and integrates anatomy into her classes.
After class, there's a large brunch at the Life Cafe, served between 9:30 and 11:00 am. The buffet includes fresh tropical fruit, muesli, chia pudding, warm oats, fresh bread, salads, and a cook-to-order option like eggs or scrambled tofu. You can sit at a table overlooking the ocean and take your time. The rest of the day is yours. Some people spend it by the infinity pool or on the small private beach. Others book a spa treatment at the Vita Spa, which offers traditional Thai massage and holistic therapies. There's also an ice bath available for an extra cost, which several guests have tried.
In the afternoon, there are more yoga classes, and in the evening, there are often special events like sound healing, gong baths, or ecstatic dance. Dinner is served between 6:30 and 8:00 pm, with a different theme each night: Thai, Middle Eastern, Italian, or Asian. The food is primarily plant-based, with some seafood options, and gluten-free choices are available. The Life Cafe also has an a la carte menu open from 9 am to 9 pm for extra snacks or drinks.
The location is a big part of the appeal. The resort is built into a cliffside, so you get ocean views from almost everywhere. The island of Koh Samui is about an hour's flight from Bangkok and has a small airport with direct international connections. The island is known for its beaches, waterfalls, temples, and lively nightlife, but Vikasa feels removed from all that, set in its own green space with its own beach access.
This is not a retreat where you follow a strict itinerary. The idea is that you tune into what you feel you need each day. The team at Vikasa, including your personal wellness host, is there to help you arrange whatever you want, whether that's a private yoga class, a spa treatment, or an excursion. The flexible booking means you can also extend your stay if you want to settle in for longer.
