Home › Retreats › Yoga, Boxing & Afrobeat Dance Retreat in Zanzibar – Flexible Island Fitness Escape
Tanzania · 7 days
The day is built around movement, but you decide how much of it you take. Sunrise meditation and a beach run start things around 6am, breakfast runs until 9, then a fitness or boxing class takes you to 10. Flow or yin yoga fills the next ninety minutes, lunch is optional from 12, and Amapiano and Afrobeat dance kicks off at 3pm. A second fitness or boxing class runs 5–6pm, dinner is optional at 7.30pm, and on Fridays yoga moves to the evening and is followed by a group sound bath. All scheduled classes are included in the price – you just show up to what you fancy.
What sets this apart from a standard resort retreat is that you set the dates and the length. There's no fixed start day, so you can slot a week, a fortnight or a month into whatever leave you've got. The classes are also a genuine mix: boxing and strength work in the morning, yoga before and after, then Afrobeat and Amapiano dance in the afternoon. That dance session is the one most people don't expect to enjoy as much as they do – it's an hour of learning steps to live African music, not a performance class.
The retreat is run at a small property on Zanzibar's south-east coast, walking distance from the beach and a short drive from Paje, which has bars, restaurants and nightlife. The team works directly with the local community to create fair work and support projects on the island, so your booking goes into the local economy rather than an overseas operator.
Optional extras include private sound healing, massages and one-to-one personal training. Island tours, kitesurfing and other excursions can be arranged on site. You're also free to just lie on the beach or read in the garden – nobody chases you into a class.
The timetable is also used by visiting instructors. From time to time the venue hosts guest-led weeks, including a dance retreat with Swiss Afro-Fusion choreographer Yagnan Zegbeu (24 November – 1 December 2026), who has performed at the UEFA Women's Opening Ceremony, the Eurovision Song Contest and the Montreux Jazz Festival. If you're an instructor, dancer, yogi or coach wanting to bring your own group, the team takes enquiries directly.
