Home › Retreats › Yoga for Elephants: A 5-Day Wellness Retreat at the Elephant Conservation Center, Laos
Laos · 5 days
The retreat runs five days at the Elephant Conservation Center in Sayaboury Province, northwestern Laos. The ECC sits on 530 hectares of protected forest and wetland, bordered by Nam Tien Lake and the Phou Xang mountain range — the name translates as Elephant Mountain. Elephants at the centre range across this land rather than being confined to pens, and guests are based on site so the herd is part of daily life rather than a day trip.
Yoga and meditation are the through-line of the week, with sessions scheduled morning and evening. The practice is gentle rather than athletic: slow flows, seated meditation, breath work, and enough space to actually settle. The retreat literature describes the approach as non-dual spirituality, so expect the teaching to lean toward awareness and connection rather than a hard physical workout or a strict lineage-based class.
This retreat is different from a standard yoga holiday in what the price supports. Proceeds go to the ECC's ongoing work — research, daily animal care, and an active breeding programme aimed at producing a new generation of elephants in a country where the species is in serious decline. The ECC also runs training and education programmes for Lao students to keep that work going. Sebastien Duffillot started the centre in 2001, and the conservation record is the reason the retreat exists.
The environment does a lot of the work. Mornings are misty over the lake and the forest is loud — birds, insects, the occasional elephant. Guests step out of their rooms into that rather than into a resort corridor. The pace is deliberately unhurried: yoga, meals, time observing and learning about the elephants, meditation before dinner, and early nights.
The retreat is all-inclusive, which covers accommodation at the centre, meals and the programme itself. Because the ECC is remote — Sayaboury is a few hours from Luang Prabang — travel is part of the trip, and the centre arranges access. Luang Prabang Yoga has stated that it closed its previous retreat operation in Nong Khiaw and that this Elephant Conservation Center programme is its new partnership going forward.
