Home › Retreats › Yoga & Hike Retreats in North Iceland: Golden Autumn and Midnight Sun Weeks
Iceland · 6 days · From EUR 300
The programme runs as roughly six days, with the daily shape staying similar across all three seasonal versions. Mornings usually start with breakfast, then a hike of two to four hours in the mountains, valleys or coastline around Eyjafjörður. Routes are chosen for the season and the group, so they range from easy valley walks to steeper mountain paths with views over the fjord. Afternoons bring a yoga session, often indoors but outdoors when the weather cooperates, followed by dinner and free time.
The Golden Autumn departure is built around the colour change in early October — the hillsides around Akureyri turn gold and red, the air is cold and clear, and wild blueberries are ripe along the trails. The Midnight Sun version runs in July and August, when it barely gets dark, so hikes can stretch late into the evening and the light stays good for photography the whole time. The Northern Lights version runs from autumn into winter: days are shorter, snow covers the ground, and the evening programme includes watching for aurora on clear nights, sometimes driving out of town away from the lights.
What separates this from a generic Iceland tour is that the yoga is not bolted on as an afterthought. Sessions are scheduled around the hikes rather than squeezed in, and the guides are the same local people who run the company's other mountain and fjord activities, so they know which routes work on a given day's weather. It is also genuinely small — you are not joining a coach group.
Akureyri itself is worth the trip on its own: a compact town on the west side of the fjord with a landmark church, a geothermal swimming pool complex, restaurants, and the world's northernmost botanical garden. Whale watching on the fjord is run by the same operator, so it can usually be added to a stay, and humpbacks and dolphins are the common sightings in summer.
Expect changeable weather — that is the point of Iceland — and bring layers, waterproofs and broken-in hiking boots. The walks are not technical and no prior yoga experience is required, but you should be comfortable being outside for several hours at a time.
